The Miracle of Ice Cubes

I read in Chinese comics or watched in TV that ice cubes sometimes used for remedial process, especially for bruises. I never expect the fast healing process that it caused by ice cubes until I experienced this: I just moved to the new house which I bought for my family and I wanted to clean up the top window of the house by stepping on the roof. I did not step correctly and bang! I fell down from 4 meters height directly to the bedroom. I landed on the floor which the right leg landed on the bed. All I felt just a painful on my leg and backache until my brother came to see the situation (he is a medical doctor).

The next thing he asked me was to move my fingers which I could do and then he asked me to lie down.

He covered my right leg with lots of ice cubes that killed me with pain. I felt like hundreds of needles shot my leg, so painful but he did not listen to my protest. Being half consciousness, I did not know how long he covered my leg with ice but I could hear he changed the ice several time. That day, I just lied down and felt painful but later on I was sweating instead of feeling cold in the leg. The next day, I could stand up and the day after I could walk again.

I never think about the ice cube until yesterday when one of my friend who is a "shinshe" (Chinese traditional medical doctor) shared his knowledge about the miracle of ice cube. He proved that the ice cube can remedy many problems like cyst (just give ice compressed on the tummy), sore throat (ice compressed on the eye), exhausted (stepping on ice for 30 minutes) and many more. He suggested us to put our feet on ice whenever we sit down and working since it will make us fresh and energized. The first time of ice stepping will be painful but if we continually do it for several times we will get used to it and no pain at all.

He once experience a terrible accident with motorbike, he fell down from speedy motorbike that caused half of his face damaged and badly injured. He put ice cubes on his face for quite sometimes until the wound healed and a new skin started to cover his face again. Now he looks just like before.

He told me that this habit will also drive us away from sickness such as catching cold or digest problem. I guess it is no harm at all to follow his suggestion since no side effect reported yet from his patients so far. If we can have the cheap way for prevention, why not starting now...

Common Test During Pregnancy

This information is taken from “What to expect when you’re expecting” (ISBN 0-7611-2132-3)

Test and When Performed -> Procedure -> Reason
Blood type. First visit -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> To determine blood type, Rh type, and Kell factor.
Hematocrit or hemoglobin. First visit and again at 20 weeks -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> If test shows iron deficiency or anemia, iron supplement is necessary.
Rubella titer. First visit -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> To check for immunity to rubella (German measles).
Syphilis test (VDRL). First visit -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> If syphilis infection is present, prompt treatment will prevent harm to fetus.
HIV test. First visit -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> Diagnosis and treatment can help the mother and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to the fetus.
Hepatitis B screen. First visit -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> If hepatitis B infection is present, the mother can be treated prenatally, and the infant can be treated immediately after birth.
Pap smear. First visit -> Cervical secretions are collected on a swab and examined under a microscope for abnormal cells -> To check for cervical cancer, or other cell abnormalities.
Gonorrhea culture and genital herpes. First visit -> Vaginal secretions are collected on a swab and cultured in the lab -> If infection is present, it can be treated.
Chlamydia test. First visit -> Area around cervix, urethra, or rectum is swabbed to check for possible infectious organisms -> If infection is present, it can be treated.
Bacteria in urine. First visit -> Urine specimen is examined -> Bacteria in urine can indicate an infection, which would then be treated.
Drug screen. First visit -> Urine specimen is examined -> Any abuse of illicit drugs during pregnancy is hazardous and should be treated promptly.
Blood pressure. Each visit -> Blood pressure is measured with cuff and stethoscope, or with electronic device -> To screen for pregnancy induced hypertension, or preeclampsia.
Sugar (glucose) in the urine. Each visit -> A specially treated “dip-stick” is dipped in a specimen of urine -> Persistent high levels of sugar in the urine could be an indication of gestational diabetes and require further testing.
Albumin (protein) in the urine. Each visit -> A specially treated “dip-stick” is dipped in a specimen urine -> High protein levels in urine could indicate a bladder infection or might be related to preeclampsia.
Triple screen (MSAFP). Between weeks 15 and 18 -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm -> Prenatal diagnosis screening test to check for the possibility of fetal defect and the need for more testing.
Glucose tolerance test. At 28 weeks (usually earlier and more often in diabetics) -> Examination of blood drawn from your arm after drinking a special glucose drink -> To test for gestational diabetes.
Group B step (GBS) test. Around 37 weeks -> A swab of the area around the vagina and rectum is examined. Urine is also examined -> To screen for GBS, which can be treated during labor to protect the newborn.

Actually I did not do all the test only blood type, hemoglobin, rubella titer, HIV test, hepatitis B screen, blood pressure, and sugar in the urine...

The Third Trimester

A name should be prepared to welcome the baby boy and I asked dr. Lie Tjung Jie to help for a name. He gave “Shan Zhe” which means the person who is kind and wise. But one name is never enough, it was then a week before the labor time Cane came up with “Maxwell” for his passion on Physics. Why Maxwell? Maxwell is considered by many physicists to be the nineteenth century scientist with the greatest influence on twentieth century physics. Einstein himself described Maxwell's work as the "most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Clerk_Maxwell). So, the baby name is Maxwell Shanzhe Pardede.

I am very grateful that I did not severe from edema (swelling due to accumulation of fluids in the tissues) of the ankles and feet during my pregnancy. I know a friend who suffered from this edema that was once considered a potential danger sign in pregnancy. To ease it, she was suggested to avoid extended periods of standing and elevates her legs when she was sitting. I always elevate my legs whenever I sit down as a habit and fortunately this habit gives benefit during pregnancy period.

Nowadays many of my friends prefer bottle feeding than breastfeeding but since I was educated the importance of breastfeeding, I prefer it more than the other.
Breast is the best since it tailored to the needs of human infants, the proportion of protein in mother’s milk is lower than in cow’s milk that making it more digestible. The milk itself served up directly from my breast isn’t improperly prepared, contaminated, or spoiled. I also read that breastfeeding is a brain booster and it keeps allergies on hold as well as an infection preventer. Many advantageous I learned and later on I felt the benefits as well.

I was well prepared for labor on my own but it was a week overdue (41st week). It was Monday at 02.30 when I got the Braxton Hicks contractions and we waited until 08.00 before we decided to go to the hospital. Actually I would have delivered at Siloam Kebon Jeruk but since due to the heavy traffic every Monday morning, we decided to go to Siloam Karawaci (just five minutes from home). The doctor showed that the aging placenta almost fail to supply adequate nutrition and oxygen so he suggested me to have cesarean section. Nevertheless, I would prefer induction of labor which started at 08.30. It was a long painful moment for me, I got dilation of cervix to 8 centimeters from 20.00 till 22.00 and no increment until then I gave up and asked for cesarean section. Maxwell was delivered at 22.45 in healthy condition. Being older than other babies, Maxwell had longer nails and opened-eyed and alert.

It was truly a great happiness for both of us to have Maxwell in our life…

The Second Trimester

I started feeling the movement of the baby inside and Cane was overwhelming when at the end of the second trimester, our doctor told us that we were expecting baby boy. A boy in Cane’s culture (Batak) and mine (Chinese) is the most important child for he will carry the surname of his father. He was so happy that he sang Batak’s song along the way home from the physician. Actually we did not really concern about the gender for we will love our child as it is, since a baby boy in the first pregnancy is quite rare in our family’s history so this news did double our happiness.

Another thing that I felt important to take into account which sometimes was forgotten was dental problems. As I read in the book that serious form of gum disease during pregnancy could increases the risk of having premature baby. The gums become swollen and inflamed, and tend to bleed easily because of pregnancy hormones. These hormones also make gums more susceptible to plaque and bacteria, which can develop into periodontitis. So I took vitamin C, juices and vegetables more than before. Careful brushing is advised as well or using dental flossing can prevent us from bleeding gum. Besides that, I started to have trouble with breathing and during the night sleep I felt uneasy. The best sleeping position that I found was on my left side with pillow placed in between two legs. I read that this position allowed maximum flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta as well as enhancing the kidney’s function.

Beware of mosquitoes, since along these month, mosquitoes tend to attack me more than Cane. When we watched TV together in the living room, I felt that mosquitoes were dancing near me more often and I was the only one who got lots of bites than he was. We took serious precautions for this problem by buying electric racket to catch and kill mosquitoes. This racket produces current if we push the button and this racket has three layers strings which trapped up the mosquitoes inside and gives the electric shocks to them. It is a safety tool to kill mosquitoes compared to any insect repellent.

I also started to take hospital tours and childbirth education class which gave me billions of benefits. They gave me valuable information from the very beginning until the child is born. The emergency number was given to us and we were welcomed to call them 24 hours for any information regarding our pregnancy. I took the class in Siloam Hospital at Karawaci – Tangerang. Cane joint the class with me to prepare himself as a good father, he even tried the simulation how to carry the new born in his hands. It was fun to know what we were expecting.

The seventh month was the celebration month according to Java tradition. During this month usually a traditional celebration is performed, the future father is asked to draw the baby's face in the coconuts, each for girl's face and boy's face. Later on, the future mother is wrapped in "sarong" and bathed with water filled with flower petals. In the water, some coins were put and spread in the air so that children can collect them afterward. Yellow rice with fried chicken and spices are served together with mixed fruits in peanut sauce. If the mixed fruits tasted delicious, it means that the future mother will deliver a baby girl otherwise a baby boy. I am no good in making traditional food, so the taste of mixed fruits really too spicy and terrible, however guests still enjoy the rest of the food...

The First Trimester

I am so grateful that Meiltrine gave me the wonderful book to help me through pregnancy process. The title of the book is “What to expect when you expecting” by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg & Sandee Hathaway. I think this book is a must to have for every couple who want to be new parents. This book did help me a lot and I passed the book to others as well. Unfortunately, the language becomes barrier in my country and sometimes I have to translate it to my friends whenever they need information.

I made a small research about pregnancy with 10 friends of mine. We all were getting pregnant on our thirties and 50% of us took more than a year for this chance. 80% of us were expecting the first child. I found out that 80% of us during the first three months had almost no negative emotional change such as misgivings, mood swings, irritability, irrationality, or weepiness compared to those who got pregnant on their twenties. Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, headaches, food aversions and cravings were rarely being found. Not even fatigue, or morning sickness, we really enjoy the pregnancy process. In our country we called it “buffalo’s pregnant”. I have no idea why they called it that.

The others 20% got terrible condition. They even could not eat or vomiting every time smelling foods was cooked. Their weight even dropped instead of gaining and took the bed rest even more. I was thinking, could be getting pregnant on the thirties made our body and emotion more prepared for any changes. One of the friends who were part of 20% was Cane’s cousin. I was so sad to see her condition and she kept on rejecting foods except sweet warm tea, then an idea just came up. In order to avoid giving her foods with smell (actually delicious smell for me), I asked her husband to make jelly from seaweed powder. He could fill in the jelly with any nutritious ingredients (milk, fruits, vegetables, or else) and fed her. She just loves to have the jelly and it helped her a lot.

I did not gain very much weight during the first trimester and no stretch marks either. I guess this is due to my fatness before the pregnancy process. This was the moment that I love most; I still could go around on foot and took stairs as exercise. Nevertheless, being cautious is necessary since people told me that miscarriage could happen during these months. One thing that is important is a medical check up before becoming pregnant especially on AIDS, rubella, hepatitis B, sugar level, and blood pressure. I was once had history on rubella 5years before and luckily there was no sign of rubella infection.

Taking ultrasound examination gives better benefit than those who did not. The case was happened to one of my staff who got pregnant on her twenties. She did not take any sonography examination until she was found being unconscious in the bathroom. She was ectopic pregnancy (implanted outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes) and had to have abortion due to the heavy bleeding in the fallopian tubes. These were symptoms that she felt during that day: sharp crampy pain in the lower abdomen, light bleeding continuously, nausea and vomiting, weakness, dizziness, and shoulder pain. If you just felt the same, you should consult with your physician before it was too late…

First Chance

It was six months later that I started the pregnancy program again. The same hormone shot was given and the same make love technique was advised. During my birthday in June 2007, my mom made a small celebration by inviting children at home. Goodies bags were sharing and birthday songs were singing, clapping hands, kisses and hugs were everywhere. I was so happy especially when my mother finally accepted Cane as his son in law.

It was hard at the beginning when I and Cane fell in love. We came from different ethnics and my mom though my friendship with Cane would never last in marriage. I and Cane were friends since in the Graduate Program. We went to the same laboratory and the same subjects (Optoelectronics and Laser Application) for 2 years before finally went to Fukui-Japan for Doctor course. It was in Fujiyama that we fell in love and started dating. However, my mother did not approve this relationship and went to Taiwan on my wedding day.

Things had change ever since Cane called her "mama" on Chinese New Year that year. She was so sad when hearing about the miscarried. She was on the way to home from the airport when I got the abortion. After entering the house, I phoned her and shared the news of my abortion. She was as shocked as me and her returning from United States actually to celebrate my pregnancy. Later on she planned to make a celebration on my birthday by inviting small children in order to stimulate my womb. She believes by performing such party, the womb will be stimulate to carry another life.

The party was simple but cheerful with cakes, candies, snacks, and sodas. It was then a week later, I found out that I was pregnant. No vomiting, no headache, no backache, no sign of sickness at all only pain on the breasts. 5 different pregnancy tests were bought and all showed positive sign. I was happy, Cane was doubt (he did not believe since no symptoms like he always heard from others) and we went to see the doctor for general check up. Oh dear... what a gift that God gives to me on my birthday... I was truly pregnant and a new life was in me. I started to count and wrote down the sensation month per month until the time to deliver.

Since I did not like milk, the doctor gave me FOLAMIL and Gramivin+DHA as part of my diet. Another extra calcium and protein powder from AMWAY. I ate fish more than before and suddenly hate chicken as well as meat. Why I secretly add protein powder on my diet without prescription from the doctor?

There was a 3 days meeting about quality assurance in higher education at Central Jakarta. I was sent by my institution as the representative. During that meeting, I met a chemist from Bandung Institute Technology with PhD from United States. A reputable chemist whom told me the miracle of protein powder that she herself felt.
She told me that on her third pregnancy, the doctor said that her fetus was carried a Toxoplasma infection. Her fetus' head grew bigger than it should be and the doctor suggested her to have abortion. She did not want to do that since in Buddhism, it is strictly forbidden to kill no matter the reason is. So she learned and read more and used her knowledge as chemist to look for the cure. It was then she found out about protein which can help increase the immune system as well as the brain development. She found the protein powder (instead of eating lots of meats or nuts) and drank it five times more than it was suggested. A month later, the fetus' head started to get to its normal size, and the sign of Toxoplasma gondii started to disappear. Now her daughter even smarter than her other brothers, so she suggested me to take protein powder as additional diet.

The result was there, the person who told me the story was a real chemist with cum laude and her research has shown from her daughter. No doubt at all, I took the protein powder until today. I hope this knowledge can help those who has the same problem like she is before. By the way, the hormone shot made my weight heavier than ever...

Miscarriage

Having experience in miscarriage, it was a hurtful moment for me. I had been waiting for 4 years to have the baby and at the first months I had to loose it. Both me and my husband went to see 3 specialists for the help to get pregnant, the first doctor said that I had trouble with my hormone and he gave me medicine so that my period would be regular (used to be 5 times a year). Taking the medicine for a year with no luck at all, we change the physician and this time he said that I had a tumor in my womb. It was a shock for me since I never experience any stomachache during having period, unless that day, and I never heard about this symptom before. He gave me a medicine to stop my period which I did not take. I was shocked and scared but I pray to God to give me strength even if I have to face this truth. A day afterwards, I got my period (thanks God).

The friend of mine told me to go to see her doctor, Dr. Ady Rahardja, and my first impression to him is good. He checked my condition and I was fine. Again another hormone shot was given to me. Having known that everything is normal, he suggested my husband to take a test as well. The result showed no difference, we both are normal. Then.... an idea just came up, he told me to make love with a doggy style position and stayed to that position for 15 minutes after intercourse.

It works.... the next visit I was positive. We were so happy and we called our family to share the news. Nevertheless, it was three days before my departure to Egypt. The doctor suggested me not to go but I had to. My travel this time was for joint research and everything had been prepared a year before. He gave me vitamin and another medicine but he was so suspicious with my pregnancy. I could see from his eyes but he did not confirm me anything for he was not sure yet.

I spent 2 weeks in Egypt with Cane (the love name for my husband) and I had no appetite at all. It was not due to the pregnancy but due to the taste. I did not like the taste of the food and I don't really like red meat, so I mostly had dates for carbohydrate (I don't like bread either). I enjoyed the view, people, hospitality, research, anything except the food.

A day after arriving hometown, I went to see the doctor and another shocked came to me. The fetus did not grow and no heart beats could be heard. I was alone when listening to his explanation since Cane was in the office, after the visit, I cried along the way home. I blamed myself but it was useless, I had to have the abortion on the next day and all I could ask was the strength from the God. One of the possibility cause of this miscarriage was the bad quality of sperm or ovum. I do believe that God has His own plan and He will give me the best. The abortion was short and I took two days rest in bed. I just knew, someday the chance will come to me again...
